Wagoner County man pleads guilty to assault and federal firearm charge

Kelly Justin Van Lewis, a 35-year-old resident of Coweta, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to felony assault and a federal firearm crime in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. The plea was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

Lewis admitted guilt to one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He also pleaded guilty to one count of Possession of Ammunition While Subject to Protective Order, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to court documents, on April 30, 2024, Lewis assaulted a victim with a dangerous weapon intending bodily harm. Further allegations state that on July 2, 2025, he knowingly possessed 990 rounds of assorted ammunition that had been shipped and transported in interstate commerce while under a protective order restraining him from acts or threats of domestic violence or abuse against an intimate partner.

The offenses took place in Wagoner County within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Reservation.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Coweta Police Department.

U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow accepted Lewis’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report be completed. Sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after consideration of federal sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.

Lewis is being held by the United States Marshals Service until sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob R. Parker represented the government in this case.
