Hundreds of attorneys in Oklahoma will offer free legal advice to residents on May 1, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., as part of the annual statewide Law Day celebration, according to an April 22 announcement. Oklahomans can call either 405-900-5299 or 918-340-5297 to speak with a licensed attorney at no cost, or submit questions by email at AskALawyer@okbar.org.

The event marks the 50th anniversary of the Ask A Lawyer program and is one of several initiatives during Law Day that aim to improve access to legal resources across the state. The Oklahoma Bar Association also provides online resources and informational videos addressing common legal questions through its Facebook page.

“This year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ask A Lawyer event,” said Amber Peckio Tulsa, President of the Oklahoma Bar Association. “The Oklahoma Bar Association annually celebrates Law Day by providing free legal advice to the public through this annual community service project. Volunteer lawyers look forward to this opportunity to give back to our communities, and we invite all Oklahomans to reach out with their questions when this Law Day tradition returns on May 1.”

Law Day was established nationally by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 after Wewoka attorney Hicks Epton first proposed celebrating law’s role in society in Oklahoma in 1951. In 1961, Congress designated May 1 as a day for Americans nationwide to celebrate freedom and justice under law.

The Oklahoma Bar Association supports its operations through membership dues, gifts, grants and other self-generated revenue according to its official website. It operates as an extension of the Oklahoma Supreme Court overseeing regulation of the legal profession according to its official website, guided by a House of Delegates and a seventeen-member Board of Governors according to its official website. The association offers programs that provide low- or no-cost legal assistance while promoting cultural well-being and access to justice for residents according to its official website.
