Dorieon Mykel Bates, 29, from Oklahoma City, has been sentenced to 138 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm after a prior felony conviction. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.

According to public records, on January 30, 2024, officers from the Oklahoma City Police Department responded to a home following a report of gunfire. The caller stated that after hearing gunshots, a stranger later identified as Bates knocked on their door and claimed he had been involved in a shooting and that his vehicle had been stolen. Officers spoke with Bates and took him to a hospital for evaluation. Later that day, Bates was returned to the scene where officers discovered his car nearby; it had not been stolen as previously claimed. Bullet holes were found in the back passenger side of the vehicle and a loaded firearm was located near the driver’s seat.

On May 7, 2025, a federal Grand Jury indicted Bates for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty on February 4, 2025, admitting he possessed the firearm despite previous felony convictions.

Bates has several prior felony convictions in Oklahoma County:
– Robbery with a firearm and unauthorized use of a credit card (case number CF-2014-5996)
– Domestic abuse by strangulation, domestic abuse (assault and battery) resulting in great bodily injury, maiming, and attempting to prevent a state’s witness from testifying (case number CF-2018-32)
– Assault and battery upon a police or other law officer (case number CF-2018-2242)

At sentencing on September 23, 2025, Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy D. DeGiusti imposed the sentence of more than eleven years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Judge DeGiusti cited Bates’s extensive criminal record and history of drug abuse when announcing the sentence.

The case resulted from an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Oklahoma City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Nichols Jr. prosecuted the case.
