Attorney General Gentner Drummond has announced that his office will investigate a proposed mosque and commercial development in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The investigation aims to determine whether the project complies with state and federal laws.
The Broken Arrow Planning Commission recently recommended approval for rezoning and a conditional use permit for the development. The proposal is scheduled to be considered by the Broken Arrow City Council at a special meeting on January 12.
Drummond stated that the decision to launch an investigation follows significant public concern about the project, including questions regarding its ownership structure, governance, and financing. He said, “Oklahomans deserve confidence that local land-use decisions are being made lawfully, transparently and in full compliance with state and federal law. My office will examine whether the proposed development and the processes surrounding it meet those legal requirements.”
He also indicated that his office would look into the funding sources for the initiative. The land intended for development is owned by the North American Islamic Trust, which has been reported to have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
“Given the realities of global terrorism, there can be no compromise on public safety and security,” Drummond said. “In our state, we have already seen a radical Islamist sentenced for plotting mass murder. Several 9/11 hijackers had attended an Oklahoma flight school. It is only appropriate to act with caution when the project in question might have connections to the Muslim Brotherhood.”
