Muskogee resident pleads guilty to attempted arson on reservation

Muskogee, Oklahoma – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has announced that Johnny Lee Vann, aged 48, has pleaded guilty to one count of attempted arson in Indian Country. This charge carries a potential penalty of up to life imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The indictment against Vann accused him of maliciously attempting to set fire to a dwelling and endanger lives on January 4, 2025. The incident took place in Muskogee County within the boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Reservation, which is located in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

The charge was brought following an investigation by the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson accepted Vann’s plea in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma and ordered a presentence investigation report.

A U.S. District Court Judge will determine Vann’s sentence after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other statutory factors.

Vann will remain in custody under the United States Marshals Service until sentencing occurs.

Jason Paul New has pleaded guilty to armed assaults and transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines. The crimes occurred within the Choctaw Nation Reservation in Oklahoma. Sentencing will follow completion of an investigation report.
