A Mexican citizen, Estevan Barron-Ruiz, was sentenced to eight months in prison for unlawfully reentering the United States after being previously removed. U.S. District Judge John D. Russell also ordered Barron-Ruiz, 49, to serve one year of supervised release following his imprisonment.
Barron-Ruiz was arrested in August 2025 and later convicted in state court for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, and making an unsafe lane change. During his booking into jail, authorities discovered he was not legally present in the country. According to court records, Barron-Ruiz had been deported from the United States in November 2014 and had not received permission from the Secretary of Homeland Security to return.
He had previously pleaded guilty to another aggravated DUI charge in state court in 2013.
Barron-Ruiz will remain detained until he is transferred to the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. He has agreed to cooperate with removal proceedings and consented to being removed from the United States after completing his sentence.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Augustus Forster.
U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated: “A Mexican national was sentenced today for Unlawful Reentry of a Removed Alien.”
