Hugo resident pleads guilty to firearm possession charges

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has announced that James Eric Diggs, 47, from Hugo, pleaded guilty to a charge of Felon in Possession of Firearm and Ammunition. This offense carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Diggs was indicted for knowingly possessing a semi-automatic pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition on February 5, 2025. This occurred after he had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year imprisonment.

The investigation leading to this charge was conducted by the Hugo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson accepted Diggs’ plea in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. The judge also ordered a presentence investigation report to be completed.

A U.S. District Court Judge will decide on the sentence after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

In the meantime, Diggs is allowed to remain free on bond under certain conditions until sentencing.
