Former Okfuskee County jailer pleads guilty to civil rights violation for inmate assault

A former jailer from Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of deprivation of rights under color of law. Donovan Matthew Pruett, 24, admitted to physically assaulting an inmate while on duty at the Okfuskee County Jail on September 28, 2024. According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, Pruett assaulted the inmate while the individual was restrained, causing bodily injury.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The plea was accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson in Muskogee. Judge Jackson also ordered a presentence investigation report.

Sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after reviewing federal sentencing guidelines and other legal factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Paladino prosecuted the case with input from the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.
