Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced on April 2 that nearly 1,000 people across Oklahoma have been trained in the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) during the program’s first year. The LAP is a screening tool used by law enforcement to identify victims of intimate partner violence who are at the highest risk of homicide, as required by state law.

The milestone highlights efforts to address domestic violence and improve public safety throughout Oklahoma. The LAP helps connect high-risk individuals with local service providers for immediate safety planning and support.

Since its launch in April 2025, the LAP training and outreach initiative has provided instruction to 968 participants across 71 counties through conferences, Basic Peace Officer Certification classes, CLEET Academy sessions, individual law enforcement agencies, victim services providers, CareerTech programs and other settings. “Every Oklahoman deserves to be safe. The Lethality Assessment Protocol is not just a policy tool; it is a lifeline,” Drummond said. “In just one year, our team has reached nearly 1,000 trained individuals across this state, and each one of them is now better prepared to recognize danger and intervene before tragedy strikes. I am proud of the extraordinary work this team has done, and I am committed to ensuring we reach every corner of Oklahoma with this critical training.”

Looking ahead, officials say they plan to expand virtual trainings for underserved and rural communities so that agencies can participate regardless of location. Nearly 100 participants have already completed these virtual sessions. A comprehensive report titled “The State of the LAP in Oklahoma” will document first-year progress when published in May.

The LAP initiative is funded by two U.S. Department of Justice grants as part of Drummond’s commitment to evidence-based strategies for protecting residents from domestic violence.

Drummond heads the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office leveraging extensive legal experience according to his official biography. The office focuses on combating crime—including organized crime—ensuring government transparency, strengthening tribal relations and upholding the rule of law according to his official biography. It also advocates for policies supporting sectors such as energy while promoting educational safeguards and tougher laws on crimes like rape or drug distribution according to his official biography.
