Bryan County man pleads guilty to federal firearm possession charge

A resident of Colbert, Oklahoma, Sammy Lynn Key, 45, has pleaded guilty to one count of felon in possession of a firearm. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, Key admitted to knowingly possessing a .38 Special caliber revolver on September 23, 2022. At the time, he had previously been convicted of an offense punishable by more than one year in prison.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The plea was accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Judge Snow also ordered that a presentence investigation report be completed.

A sentencing date will be set by a U.S. District Court Judge after reviewing federal sentencing guidelines and other legal factors. Key is being held by the United States Marshals Service until sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan E. Soverly and Lewis M. Reagan prosecuted the case for the government.

“The Indictment charged Key with knowingly possessing a .38 Special caliber revolver on September 23, 2022, after having been previously convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year imprisonment.”
