Attorney General Gentner Drummond urged Oklahomans on April 6 to be alert for contractor fraud following recent severe weather in the state. Drummond said that scams related to repair work often rise after damaging storms and tornadoes.
The warning comes as many homeowners begin repairs and may be vulnerable to fraudulent contractors. “In the aftermath of severe weather, scammers often target vulnerable homeowners trying to recover and rebuild,” Drummond said. “While it is natural to want to make repairs quickly, taking the time to choose a reputable contractor is critical to protecting your home and finances.”
Drummond’s Consumer Protection Unit provided several tips for avoiding scams, including seeking referrals from trusted sources, obtaining multiple written estimates, verifying local credentials, being wary of large upfront payments or cash-only requests, watching out for high-pressure sales tactics or unsolicited offers, and researching thoroughly before signing any agreement.
