Atoka man pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession in federal court

An Atoka resident has pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Vet Sentrel Colbert, 43, admitted guilt to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to court documents, Colbert was indicted for knowingly possessing a 9mm Luger caliber semi-automatic pistol on August 3, 2024. At the time, he had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted Colbert’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. The final sentence will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after reviewing federal sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.

Colbert remains out on bond under conditions pending his sentencing hearing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lewis M. Reagan prosecuted the case for the government.
