Adair County man pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession

An Adair County resident has pleaded guilty to a federal firearm charge, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Jeremy Lee Poafpybitty, 40, from Bunch, Oklahoma, admitted guilt to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors stated that on May 6, 2025, Poafpybitty knowingly possessed a 9mm semi-automatic pistol after having previously been convicted of an offense punishable by more than one year in prison. The incident took place in Cherokee County within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation Reservation.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Cherokee Nation Marshals Service, and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted Poafpybitty’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. Sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after consideration of federal sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

Poafpybitty will remain in custody pending sentencing by the United States Marshals Service.
